Solid Contamination in Oil

In the Lubrication field, Contaminants are the bad elements which need to be prevented and removed on time as when detected. Neglecting the need of Purifications often leads to Premature Failure and Mechanical Breakdowns. This will not only cause mechanical breakdowns but also it will shoot up the cost of maintenance and repair of Equipment.

There are several contaminants which can cause the lubricating oil to become contaminated such as external dust, water or humidity which are generated outside the machine.

On the other hand some contaminants are from internal origin, This includes degradation product or wear particles that come from the machine itself and at any cost these cannot be avoided during operation.

  • Solid Contamination in your oil?

Coal handling plants in Thermal Power plants faced solid contamination issues in their Hydraulic oil uses in wagon tipplers.

The old orthodox approach suggests that hydraulic oil should be replaced when each time contamination occurs for smooth functioning and to avoid premature failure and mechanical breakdown

But the Minimac System Private Ltd suggests the use of Hydraulic Oil Filtration Machine (FS-X Series) and you can save the cost of replacing oil.

Varnish is solid contamination formed because of various reasons such as oil degradation and oxidation. Learn how ignoring it can affect the machine operation.

  • Solid Contamination in Gear Oil?

Operations in Coal Mills invite solid contamination in the form of minute coal particles in oil used in Gearboxes. This event is very common in all power plants

Operations in coal mills are many times hindered by this solid contamination in gear oil which end up blocking gearboxes and putting operation on hold.

Regular filtration ensures continuous and cost-effective operations. Minimac System Pvt Ltd provides equipment for solving contamination problems in Gear Oils which are used in large amounts in Coal Mills.

Prior to Minimac being involved in the project, in August 2018, as a part of the pre-commissioning activity, flushing of 14 compressors and heat exchangers (ACHE, Picture 2) was performed and completed by a service provider. But soon after in the month of October, during the commissioning of the compressor, large debris deposits were found getting generated and collected in the in-line lube oil filter. The debris consisted of silica, metal shaving, and a lot of chunky particles. The commissioning activity was immediately stalled, leading to a threat to the project timeline and subsequent financial loss for the EPC company and the Operating company - PDO.

Large particle contamination detection in the inline filters of all heat exchangers and compressors during the commissioning stage, even though flushing was completed as a part of the pre-commissioning activity.

During the root cause analysis there were two reasons...Read more.
