What is varnish and its effects

Image
The condition of the oil in lubrication and hydraulic systems is indicative of the health of the entire system. There are two essentials for ensuring productivity, for avoiding malfunctions and for reducing operating costs: 1.  Monitoring the fluid condition 2. Continuous maintenance of operating equipment Varnish is a soluble and insoluble contaminant made up of by-products of oil degradation and oxidation. It can appear as a gel-resin like consistency or resemble solid deposits in the oil, or which plates out on the metal surfaces of lube systems. It can be the result of several possible root causes, including high temperatures, electrostatic discharges, lubricant degradation and micro dieseling. Varnish can produce a number of problems related to machine operation, such as valve stiction, lubricant flow restriction, clogged filters, etc How is varnish different from sludge? Varnish is a tough, adherent oxide or carbonaceous material that coats internal machine surfaces. Hot surf

Lubrication Challenges in Steel Plant

Image
Steel production in India - India beat Japan in steel production in 2019 and became the world’s second-largest steel producer with 111.2 million tonnes (MT) of steel production. The demand for steel production is estimated to increase in the upcoming years. It is crucial to keep the machinery healthy in order to fulfill these growing steel production demands. In the journey of fulfilling these demands, there is a factor called “Lubrication” that is often overlooked or taken for granted which ultimately results in disturbance in machine operation and mechanical breakdowns. Let’s take a dig at such challenges related to lubrication in steel plants. Steel plants  have various components for steel production, finishing, and rolling. Steel production involves an environment consisting of various conditions which contaminate Oil. Some of the most frequently faced challenges are: 1) Heavy Load 2) High Speed 3) Extreme Fluctuating Temperature 4) Dusty Environment These invite both Solid Part

Success Story: A small change can bring a Big Difference

Image
Do you agree that the little things, if done consistently, add to the big things? The same applies to every field of life, whether it is personal or professional. The very recent example recites it very true. The whole story begins with an opportunity to supply and commission 8 numbers of Oil Quality Testing Equipment for a sector that is crucial regarding the nation's safety. It was a great experience to work with the best brains and brave hearts. We started our journey from Pune to a remote location in Odisha, Koraput . When we landed at the nearest airport, we knew it was more than a 5-hour journey by road, crossing many hills, valleys, forests, and ghats. During our travel, we encountered many wild animals and, surprisingly, snakes like pythons crossing the road. Probably, high wind and rain were making it more scary and adventurous. We arrived at our stay very late at night. After such a long day, we were excited to hit the bull’s eye the next day. We couldn’t resist the

Is Overgreasing Dangerous?

Image
Greasing is an important process that ensures the smooth functioning of machines. Let’s understand these two aspects first - Overgreasing and Undergreasing. To determine which of these is more problematic could be difficult but we can definitely decide which one is more damaging. Too much grease can generate excessive heat in the bearing and may result in seal failure. When the lip seals rupture because of over greasing, it allows the harmful contaminants to enter the bearing housing. This would create excessive pressure and may collapse the bearing race. On the other hand, not putting enough grease may cause damage to the rotating parts. Undergreasing allows contaminants to enter the load zones. We can say that it's better to avoid both aspects of over and under greasing. How to determine the amount of grease a bearing needs? The factor responsible for determining the right amount of grease depends on the dimensions of the bearing or its housing. Greasing must be done based on p
